Shoulder & Back Openers
The workshop shall explore opening the shoulders
and back to create more freedom of movement helping also to alleviate
the tension and stiffness that readily gathers around these areas.
A series of mobilising, stabilising and stretching exercises will
be sequenced along with classical yoga poses.
The workshop will be methodical, building upon stages to increment
slowly but progressively. Gerry has a very structural approach
complemented with breath, sequencing and movement.
Workshop

Backbend Pose - Urdhva Dhanurasana
Urdvha
Dhanurasana (crab posture, the full backbend) strengthens the
arms, legs, abdomen, and spine, and
gives a boost of energy yet it remains one of the most physically
challenging asanas in yoga. The last time most of us managed to
achieve this posture was in our high school days and since then
the shoulders have rounded and the back has stiffened making the
posture almost impossible for us to achieve. In this one day workshop
we will be using techniques that Matt learnt in Mysore, India
to help students open up the back and strengthen the spinal muscles
so that they are able to move more comfortably into the complete
posture.
Once the back is opened fully we will be able to experience the
benefits of the “upward bow pose”.
Matt is a teacher and advanced practitioner of
Ashtanga Yoga. He is from Manchester and started yoga about nine
years ago after a friend suggested he tried it to help him chill
out! He never thought for one minute after his very first class
that this amazing practice would completely change his life for
the better- both mentally and physically.
Workshop
suitable to all levels.

Sequential
Flow
This
workshop will explore the sequential flow of force through the
body as a means of determining clear structural
alignment. We will be clarifying where movement originates from
in the body and where it moves to. The Sun Salute sequence will
be used as a basis for this exploration.
Christine
has been teaching for 18 years. She is currently based in Manchester
and is a regular guest teacher at balance.

Introduction to Yin/Yang Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation
This 3 day workshop will focus on long held, passive Yin postures
that prepare the body for sitting meditation. Yin Yoga is an essential
complement to the more active styles of yoga. The Yin style also
keeps the body supple at its core, while encouraging stagnate
chi (prana) to flow throughout the joints and meridians, restoring
and revitalizing the organ system. Sarah will present an explanation
of this practice while we are in the poses. Drawing from Buddhist
themes, Sarah will also describe ways to encouage emotional maturity
and meditative awareness in our yoga practices, as well as in
our life. A Yang (flow) style asana practice will follow, geared
toward strenghening the core while encouragaing ease and grace
in movement. We will finish the practice period with Mindfulness
meditation.
Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She interweaves the insights
and practices of Yoga and Buddhism into an integral practice to
enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a
Yin sequence of long held poses to enhance the meridian and organ
systems, combined with a flow or Yang practice, influenced by
Viniyoga, Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachings. She also teaches trainings
and silent retreats with her husband Ty. They live with their
teen-age daughter Imani-Jade in Marin, California. She is author
of the upcoming book Insight Yoga. For more information on her
please see her DVDs: Yoga, Yin and Vinyasa and Insight Yoga, and
